Why Knee-Specific Rehab Matters
The knee is one of the most complex and commonly injured joints in the human body. Generic rehab programs often miss the specific strength and movement demands required for a full and lasting recovery. At SMART, our knee rehab Calgary programs are built around the individual, not the injury. We understand that a runner’s knee rehab looks different from a hockey player’s, and both look different from someone recovering from a total knee replacement. Every program is tailored with precision, progressed with purpose, and supported by both clinical insight and performance coaching expertise. That is what makes our approach to knee rehab in Calgary different from anything else available in the city.
Evidence-Informed. Client-Centred.
At SMART, we do not just put clients through exercises and call it rehabilitation. Every program we design is grounded in evidence-informed principles built around periodization, movement quality, progressive loading, and client monitoring. Before any client starts knee rehab in Calgary with us, we conduct a thorough movement and performance assessment to identify strengths, compensations, and areas of risk. This allows us to build a plan that is both effective and safe for your specific knee condition. Our coaching staff blends athletic performance expertise with clinical knowledge from our on-site clinic. That means we understand how the knee moves, how it breaks down, and how to keep you active and out of chronic pain. We track loading, monitor recovery, and adjust programming in real time. Recover Strong. Stay Active for Life.
Knee injuries are one of the most common barriers to an active, pain-free life, and without the right rehabilitation approach, they become recurring problems. At SMART, injury prevention is not an afterthought. It is built directly into every knee rehab Calgary program we design. Our clinical team works alongside our performance coaches to identify movement compensations and muscular imbalances before they lead to re-injury. Common knee conditions we help clients recover from include ACL tears, meniscus injuries, patellofemoral pain, post-knee replacement recovery, runner’s knee, and chronic knee instability. Whether you are coming back from surgery or trying to stay active through a demanding lifestyle, our integrated performance and clinical model means you have the right professionals supporting you at every step. FAQ FOR KNEE REHAB
Common questions about knee rehab in Calgary answered by our clinical and performance team at SMART.
Do you accept second-opinion cases?
Absolutely! This is one of our passions at SMART. If you’ve been told different things, feel stuck in your rehab, or just want clarity, we provide a thorough, objective assessment to give you a clear path forward. We believe in honest answers, measurable insights, and a plan you can trust.
Do you offer AHS-covered physiotherapy?
We do not offer AHS-funded sessions. This allows us to deliver longer, one on one appointments, integrate advanced testing, and provide a higher level of individualized care without the limitations of a public system.
Do you only treat athletes?
Not at all. While we work with athletes at all levels, we also have extensive experience helping active adults and individuals recovering from surgeries like knee replacements. If you want to move better and feel stronger, you belong here.
How many sessions per week will I need?
It depends on your injury, goals, and how consistent you are outside the clinic. In most cases, we front-load sessions early in rehab to build momentum and guide progress—often leading to fewer total visits over time. Your clinician can work with you on a plan that fits your life, finances, and goals.
How are sessions structured?
Every session is purposeful. We start with objective measurements to track progress, followed by targeted manual techniques to prepare your tissues (and nervous system) for movement. From there, we focus on active rehab-building strength, control, and capacity. You will be moving every session.
Do I need a referral to see you?
No referral is required. You can book directly with our team.
How do I access my exercise program?
Your program is delivered through Physiapp or TeamBuildr, a professional training platform used by high-level coaches and clinicians. You’ll receive clear video demonstrations, structured programming, and progressions, all accessible from your phone. No stick-figure paper handouts here!
How long will it take to recover from my injury?
Timelines get thrown around a lot. 6 months, 9 months, a year. At SMART, we focus on criteria-based progression, not arbitrary timelines. You may hit a time milestone, but if you’re not physically prepared for your activity, your risk of re-injury is high. We progress you when you’re ready, not when the calendar says so.
Do you offer virtual or hybrid rehab?
Yes. We provide virtual knee rehabilitation for clients across Alberta who want access to high-level, performance-driven care. You’ll receive the same structured programming, guidance, and progression, it’s just delivered remotely. In some cases, clients choose a hybrid model with both virtual and in-person appointments.
What makes your rehab different?
At SMART Performance, we know when to play-it-safe and when to push you. We combine strength and conditioning principles with objective testing to guide every stage of rehab. This isn’t passive treatment. It’s a structured, progressive system designed to get you back stronger, not just pain-free. We fully embrace a model of ‘training in the presence of injury’.
Will I be working one-on-one with a physiotherapist?
Yes. Every session is dedicated entirely to you. Whether you book 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions, that time is never shared with another client. Your therapist is present 100% of the time.
Can I continue training while in rehab?
In most cases, yes! With the right modifications. Our goal is to keep you moving and training safely while addressing your injury, not shut you down completely. We work closely with your support system, medical and performance team to keep you on the right track.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
A comprehensive assessment of your movement, strength, and current limitations. We’ll identify key deficits, outline your rehab plan, and get you started right away, so you leave with clarity and direction.
What if I’ve tried physio before and it didn’t work?
That’s common and usually comes down to lack of structure or progression. At SMART, your rehab follows a clear, criteria-based system with measurable progress at every stage.
Is SMART the right place for me?
If you’re looking for shortcuts, probably not.
If you’re ready to do your rehab properly and commit to a structured, high-level process- yes!I’m ready to do this properly, how do I begin?
