Why Volleyball-Specific Training Matters
Volleyball places unique demands on the body — repeated jumping, overhead hitting, rapid lateral movement, and explosive rotational power. Generic training programs miss these demands entirely. At SMART, our volleyball-specific programming targets the exact physical qualities that translate to court performance: vertical power, shoulder stability, ankle resilience, and reactive agility. Every phase is designed to make you a more explosive, durable, and capable volleyball athlete.
Evidence-Informed. Athlete-Centred.
At SMART, we don’t just put athletes through drills and call it training. Every program we design is grounded in evidence-informed principles — built around periodization, movement quality, progressive overload, and athlete monitoring. Before any athlete starts a program, we conduct a thorough movement and performance assessment to identify strengths, compensations, and areas of risk. This allows us to build a training plan that’s not only effective but safe.
Our coaching staff blends athletic performance expertise with clinical knowledge from our on-site clinic. That means we understand how the body moves, how it breaks down, and how to keep your athlete on the field and out of the physio office. We track training loads, monitor recovery, and adjust programming in real time based on how each athlete is responding — because what works on paper doesn’t always match what an athlete needs on a given week.
Train Hard. Stay on the Court.
Volleyball is a physically demanding sport, and injuries — particularly to the shoulders, knees, and ankles — are one of the biggest barriers to an athlete reaching their potential. At SMART, injury prevention isn’t an afterthought — it’s built directly into every program we design. Our clinical team works alongside our performance coaches to identify movement compensations and muscular imbalances before they become injuries. Common volleyball-related injuries we help athletes prevent and recover from include shoulder impingement, patellar tendinitis, ACL and knee injuries, ankle sprains, and lower back pain. Whether you’re coming back from an injury or trying to stay healthy through a long season, our integrated performance and clinical model means you have the right professionals in your corner at every step of the process.

FAQ FOR VOLLEYBALL
Have questions about our volleyball training programs? Here are some of the most common questions we get from athletes and parents.
What age groups do your volleyball programs serve?
Our volleyball training programs welcome athletes aged 10 and up, covering youth, high school, club, and adult competitive levels. Sessions are structured around each athlete’s physical and cognitive development stage. Younger athletes focus on foundational movement, coordination, and building a love for the game, while older athletes work on sport-specific strength, jump mechanics, and position-based skills. Every new athlete goes through an initial assessment so we can place them in the right group for their current fitness level and experience.
What’s included in a typical training session?
A typical session at SMART begins with a dynamic warm-up targeting volleyball-relevant movement patterns, followed by jump training, lateral agility work, and court-specific movement drills. From there, athletes move into strength or power development focused on the demands of hitting, blocking, and digging. Sessions close with a cooldown and brief recovery protocol. Depending on the program phase, you may also incorporate shoulder stability work, mental performance strategies, or nutrition timing discussions. Every session is coached, tracked, and adjusted based on athlete progress.
How do I know which program is right for my athlete?
We recommend starting with a free assessment so our coaches can evaluate your athlete’s current movement quality, strength baseline, and sport-specific needs. From there, we’ll recommend the best fit — whether that’s our group volleyball training program, 1-on-1 coaching, or a combination. Our goal is to meet every athlete where they are and build a clear path forward.
Do you offer trial sessions or assessments?
Yes — we offer an initial assessment for all new athletes before they commit to a program. This gives our coaches a clear picture of where the athlete is physically, what their goals are, and how we can best support their development. It also gives the athlete a chance to experience our coaching style and training environment firsthand.
What equipment do players need to bring?
Athletes should come dressed in comfortable athletic wear with appropriate court shoes — clean indoor volleyball or athletic sneakers are recommended. We provide all training equipment in the gym. For field or outdoor sessions, bring water and be prepared for the weather. We’ll let you know in advance if anything specific is needed for a session.
How often should my athlete train per week?
For meaningful progress, we generally recommend 2 to 3 sessions per week, depending on the program phase and the athlete’s current schedule. During the off-season, more frequent training allows for greater development. During the competitive season, we scale back to maintenance-level training to keep athletes fresh while preserving the gains they’ve built.
Do you train during the off-season?
Absolutely — the off-season is actually the most important time to train. It’s when athletes have the most time to develop foundational strength, correct movement imbalances, and build the physical capacity that will carry them through the next competitive season. Our off-season programs are structured to maximize development while keeping training engaging and progressive.
What makes SMART different from other volleyball training programs?
At SMART, every program is built on evidence-informed principles — periodization, movement screening, load management, and sport-specific programming designed by coaches who understand volleyball’s unique demands. We don’t just put athletes through generic workouts. We assess, plan, and adjust based on real data and athlete feedback. Add in our on-site physiotherapy, injury prevention screening, and long-term development approach, and you have a training experience that’s hard to find anywhere else in Calgary.
Can I train for multiple sports at the same facility?
Yes — SMART Performance Training Centre offers sport-specific programs for volleyball, football, soccer, basketball, and more. Many of our athletes play multiple sports, and our coaches are experienced in managing multi-sport athletes. We can build a training plan that accounts for your full competitive schedule, ensuring you develop across sports without overtraining or increasing injury risk.
How do I book a session or get started?
Getting started is simple. You can book directly through our online booking system, call us, or send an email and our team will get back to you quickly. We recommend starting with our free assessment so we can learn about your athlete’s goals, evaluate their current level, and recommend the best program fit. From there, we’ll get you set up and training.
